THE FUTURE OF VINTAGE

THE FUTURE OF VINTAGE

Taken from Futugo’s online conference. On twitter space.

Vintage clothing became extremely fashionable in the past few years, but where are we going with this?

First of all, there is a reason why we are constantly adding words like “pre-owned”, “pre-loved” to our vocabulary – is because the true vintage clothing should be at least 20 years old but not till 100 – after 100 it is considered to be antique.

But how come old garments became so precious to us? We value vintage fashion because designers at that time had a very different approach to it and since we're struggling with fast fashion, we seek better quality and different ideas.

But this is not the only thing that attracts us – the constant looking back for inspiration to different decades always happened. And vintage clothing not only reminds you of previous times, but it can actually be a piece of that time – with history.

The phenomenal part about vintage fashion is not the clothing itself, but more about our social-cultural changes, that we, 10 years ago, looked at some pre-loved pieces as trash, and now consider it as treasure.

But how does vintage correlate with our future? It can be closely connected to blockchain technology.

Blockchain technology can help to authenticate the uniqueness of vintage clothing and that adds even more value. It also creates a digital asset. Digitalizing vintage pieces does not completely take out the value of time. We still appreciate early pieces more, even NFT’s.

Blockchain technology adds traceability to a piece and this is one of the factors which can increase the probability of high return if investing in fashion pieces.

Another reason why digitalization of vintage fashion is so important is perseverance. As one of the speakers mentioned, because of the war in Ukraine, a project of digitalizing Ukraine’s national clothing has started since many of the pieces were lost. It is to preserve and keep the remembrance and maybe, recreation.

To sum it up, vintage fashion will not go anywhere soon. Not to mention sustainability benefits, but this phenomena will be integrated into upcoming ways of consumer’s actions, either physical or digital.
